INTERFAITH MINISTRY
What is Interfaith Ministry?
Interfaith Ministry is not a religion. It is a ministry that is found among and within all religions. Interfaith is a bridge that connects people through the common fundamental elements of all world religions: love, compassion, forgiveness, divinity, and faith. Religions have their own individual traditions, histories, and beliefs, and Interfaith Ministry honors and respects these differences. Diversity is an important part of Interfaith practices. Often Interfaith is described as a way of living that includes an awareness of the sacredness found everywhere and in every moment, a way of honoring all parts of creation, and a sense of unity and interconnectedness among all living things. Interfaith ministry provides a space of safety and inclusion for all.
What does an Interfaith Minister do?
An Interfaith Minister, who has been trained through a legitimate interfaith seminary and is an ordained minister, can do everything a secular minister is able to do. Ministers often officiate ceremonies, work in churches, provide spiritual counseling, serve in hospitals and hospices, spend time as activists for important social issues, and can be found within community services. Ceremonies performed can be grounded in one particular faith tradition, or combine several religious traditions, or be creatively designed to meet individual needs. Interfaith Ministers have their own faith beliefs; however, those beliefs are not a part of the services provided. Ministers are trained in world religions and are able to support all people. Interfaith focuses on service work that assists people on their spiritual journeys and provides healing for the highest good of humanity.
Where are Interfaith Ministers found?
Interfaith Ministers can be found everywhere. Some ministers have ordinary jobs and serve in interfaith roles on their own time. Other ministers have full time interfaith positions in various organizations. To find an Interfaith Minister, you can search the Internet. Many ministers are involved with holistic practices and have websites. Interfaith Ministers can also be found by contacting an interfaith seminary such as One Spirit Interfaith Seminary, which is listed on my Resource page. It is recommended that you research the training and ordination of any Interfaith Minister you are considering; not all self proclaimed ministers have been legitimately trained and ordained. An Interfaith Minister can meet your spiritual needs or provide resources that can help you.
